The Senate will vote on a bill to protect same-sex marriage on Tuesday night. Twelve Republican senators so far have voted to advance the bill. Senators have tweaked the bill, which passed the Democratic-controlled House in July, to get GOP support. So far, 12 Republicans have cast votes in support of advancing the bill, and more could emerge when the final version comes up. A Gallup poll from June 2021 found that 70% of Americans — including 55% of Republicans — support same-sex marriage.

Trump issued a re-endorsement for GOP Sen. Mike Lee of Utah after DeSantis shot an ad for him. "The Great People of Utah have a gem in Mike Lee," he said. "Senator Lee has the support of a broad range of conservatives including President Trump, Gov. "To get America on the right path forward we need a Republican majority in the Senate and that's why I'm proud to endorse Mike Lee," DeSantis said in the ad for Lee. Trump helped DeSantis secure the 2018 Republican gubernatorial nomination, but this round DeSantis has not asked for Trump's endorsement.

"If we prevail in this race, it will make Utah the most influential state in the union, because nothing will get through the Senate without Utah's support," said McMullin. A former CIA operations officer, McMullin was a Republican until 2016, when Donald Trump won the party's nomination to run for president. Of the charities benefiting from Twitter's money, one focuses on engaging Latinos in the political process, and the other works to "eliminate racial discrimination, champion social justice, and improve race relations" in sports.
